Fenway Sports Management and ESPN Events to Host
2022 Wasabi Fenway Bowl on December 17

The Bowl Game matchup between the American Athletic Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference brings college football back to New England’s most historic venue

Boston, MA – May 26, 2022 – The Wasabi Fenway Bowl, an annual college football bowl game at Fenway Park, will take place on Saturday, December 17, at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN. The Wasabi Fenway Bowl will mark the return of college football to America’s Most Beloved Ballpark and will feature teams from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). It is part of a multi-year partnership between ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management (FSM), the sales, marketing, and special events arm for Fenway Sports Group’s impressive portfolio of sports properties.

“The Wasabi Fenway Bowl will truly be a one-of-a-kind sporting event for fans everywhere,” said Wasabi Technologies Vice President of Global Brand and Communications Julie Barry. “Along with our partners at Fenway Sports Management, Wasabi is inspired to create a memorable new sports tradition in New England, and we are so excited to bring this year’s game to life at the iconic Fenway Park.”

Teams playing in the 2022 Fenway Bowl will be determined by regular season win-loss record, geographic proximity, as well as previous appearances and matchups. FSM and ESPN Events will jointly produce the game, pending final city licensing approval, which will be televised on ESPN. Information on ticket sales is forthcoming.

“We are so proud to be a part of the Wasabi Fenway Bowl which provides an outstanding opportunity for our football student-athletes, coaches, alumni and fans,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “Boston is an amazing city and home to the iconic Fenway Park. We appreciate all the amazing work by ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management.”

“We are looking forward to having one of our outstanding teams compete against a respected ACC opponent in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl,” said American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco. “Our student-athletes will relish the unforgettable opportunity to play a postseason game at Fenway Park, and our fans will be able to enjoy a rewarding bowl experience in the City of Boston. We appreciate the hard and skillful work done to make this bowl a reality by Sam Kennedy, Fred Olsen, Brett Miller, and their outstanding team at Fenway under the trying circumstances of the past few years.”

Although the Wasabi Fenway Bowl will mark the first college football bowl game to be played at Fenway Park, the stadium has hosted football games for nearly a century. The ballpark served as home to the Boston Patriots from 1963-68, and, after a 47-year hiatus, Fenway Park returned as a football venue in 2015 for the Shamrock Series game between Notre Dame and Boston College. Two years later, the Fenway Gridiron Series featured three games among six of New England’s major college programs, along with a series of high school football rivalries. In 2018, Fenway Park hosted the 135th edition of “The Game” between Harvard and Yale. Last year, the ballpark hosted a pair of Thanksgiving week doubleheaders, providing an iconic backdrop to local high school football rivalry games featuring East Boston against South Boston, North Andover against Andover, Blackstone Valley Tech against Nipmuc Regional, and Winchester against Woburn.

“We are delighted to have the date of the 2022 Wasabi Fenway Bowl locked in and look forward to welcoming fans on December 17,” said Fenway Sports Management President Mark Lev. “We have put a tremendous amount of effort into activating Fenway Park 365 days a year to bring diverse experiences that attract a wide range of audiences. We cannot wait for the return of college football this winter.”

Last year, FSM proudly recognized outstanding New England educators through the Honor Roll program. This program recognized 30 educators, administrators and staff across New England as Honor Roll Finalists, including three Monster Finalists: Bowman Elementary School teacher Joshua Curhan, Barnstable Intermediate School custodian Terry Crawley, and The Gilbert School teacher Katie Wood, who each received vouchers to DonorsChoose.org to support their respective schools and classrooms. The 2022 Fenway Bowl will include a similar charitable component that will be announced at a later date. Further details on the Wasabi Fenway Bowl, the Honor Roll and the bowl’s mission can be found at the game’s website: www.fenwaybowl.com, on Facebook or on Twitter and Instagram @FenwayBowl.

SMU and University of Virginia to Play in Inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl on December 29

Tickets available for the American Athletic Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference matchup, which will be televised on ESPN

Boston, MA – December 5, 2021 – The SMU Mustangs and University of Virginia (UVA) Cavaliers will play each other in the inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park on Wednesday, December 29 at 11 a.m. ET, announced by ESPN this afternoon. The inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl, jointly produced by Fenway Sports Management and ESPN Events, will be nationally televised on ESPN. It will mark the first college football bowl game to be played at the historic home of the Boston Red Sox, and the first Division 1 bowl game to be held in New England.

“The Wasabi Fenway Bowl will be a new landmark sporting tradition New England can be proud of, and we could not be more excited to have these two outstanding teams participating in the inaugural game at historic Fenway Park on December 29,” said Michael Welts, CMO of Wasabi Technologies. “Beyond the field, we are also honored to further the game’s philanthropic mission through the Honor Roll program, which recognizes the incredible efforts of educators to help students reach their full potential in and out of the classroom, while supporting access to quality education in our region. Not only will the Wasabi Fenway Bowl ignite a new passion for college sports in New England, it’s a tremendous opportunity to give back to our local community.”

SMU will be playing its 19th bowl game in program history, after ending the season with an 8-4 record overall, going 4-4 in AAC play. The Mustangs were ranked in the top 25 for five weeks in 2021, reaching as high as No. 16, and feature one of the nation’s top offenses, led by record-setting quarterback Tanner Mordecai.

“We are excited to be invited to the inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl,” said SMU Director of Athletics Rick Hart. “Our student-athletes worked hard this season to reach our goal of making the post-season and this will provide a truly unique and first-of-its kind student-athlete experience in playing at Fenway Park against an ACC team.”

Virginia enters the 2021 Bowl Season with a record of 6-6 (4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference). The 2021 Wasabi Fenway Bowl will be UVA’s 22nd bowl game appearance in program history. The matchup marks the first-ever meeting between SMU and Virginia. The Cavaliers will play their first game in the city of Boston since 2010 when they visited Boston College.

“We are pleased to be the Atlantic Coast Conference’s representative for the inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl,” said Virginia athletics director Carla Williams. “Playing at such a historic venue will be a special opportunity for our football program and a great experience for our fans. I am grateful for everything that Bronco Mendenhall has done to elevate our football program over the past six years and excited to see him be able to coach this team one more time. It will be a very special moment for everyone associated with Virginia football.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to coach my team one more time and it will be a remarkable experience to play a bowl game at Fenway Park,” said Virginia head football coach Bronco Mendenhall. “There are a handful of sporting arenas in the country that are as unique, historic and beloved as Fenway Park. So, the idea of coaching my last game at Virginia at a place like Fenway Park, I really like that.

“At the beginning of the year, we set winning a bowl championship as one of our goals. We are going to plan a great experience for our team, enjoy our time in one of the most historic cities in our country and prepare really hard for the final time we will compete together.”

A media day will take place on Tuesday, December 28 with conference representatives, team coaches and captains, as well as Wasabi Fenway Bowl representatives. Additional information will be shared closer to the event. Media interested in applying for credentialing for the game or learning more about the media day can contact media@fenwaysportsmanagement.com.

While in Boston, teams will participate in special events and community outreach, including trolley tours of the city, a live performance by the Improv Asylum, and time spent connecting with students in the community.

“We are thrilled to welcome SMU and Virginia’s student-athletes, coaches, staff, families, and fans to the inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl,” said Fenway Sports Management President Mark Lev. “Since announcing the Fenway Bowl in 2019, our team has worked closely with the City of Boston, Wasabi and our Executive Committee to deliver this new sports tradition to fans across the country and build on over a century of college football at Fenway.”

Fenway Sports Management and ESPN Events to Host Inaugural Fenway Bowl on December 29

The Bowl Game matchup between the AAC and ACC begins a
new chapter in Fenway Park’s storied history of college football

Boston, MA – May 27, 2021 – The inaugural “Fenway Bowl,” a newly-created annual college football bowl game at Fenway Park, will take place on Wednesday, December 29, at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN. Following its postponement in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the much-anticipated launch of the Fenway Bowl will mark the first college football bowl game to be played at the historic home of the Boston Red Sox, and the first Division 1 bowl game to be held in New England. This new tradition will build on over a century of college football at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark and will feature teams from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). It is part of a multi-year partnership between ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management (FSM), the sales, marketing, and special events arm for Fenway Sports Group’s impressive portfolio of sports properties.

“Fenway Park rose to the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic and played multiple unique roles this year – from serving as home to a mass vaccination site to hosting local college and high school graduations – in addition to safely welcoming fans back for baseball,” said Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy. “We are incredibly proud of these achievements, and as we approach the 2021 college football season, we are delighted to introduce the ballpark and its rich history to the excitement of NCAA bowl games for the first time. Our team is grateful for this collaboration with the American Athletic and Atlantic Coast Conferences, ESPN Events, and Mayor Janey, and we look forward to hosting an incredible experience for student-athletes, coaches, and fans, while enriching New England’s education community.”

Teams playing in the 2021 Fenway Bowl will be determined by regular season win-loss record, geographic proximity, as well as previous appearances and matchups. FSM and ESPN Events will jointly produce the game, pending final city licensing approval, which will be televised on ESPN. Information on ticket sales is forthcoming.

“We are honored and delighted to be a part of the Fenway Bowl and look forward to having an American Athletic Conference team compete in such an iconic venue against a respected ACC opponent,” said American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco. “Our primary goal with our bowl partnerships is to provide quality postseason experiences in desirable destinations for our student-athletes, their families and our fans. The Fenway Bowl and the City of Boston provide everything that we are looking for in that regard.”

“We appreciate our bowl partnership with Fenway Sports Management and ESPN Events, and our teams are looking forward to the opportunity to represent the ACC in the inaugural Fenway Bowl,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips. “Boston is a tremendous city, directly within the ACC’s footprint, and we are proud that our football programs will have the opportunity to compete at the historic Fenway Park.”

Fenway Park is no stranger to hosting football games, having done so regularly since its opening in 1912, including the stadium’s first college football game in 1914.

“Together with the ESPN Events team, we are thrilled to embark on a new chapter of college football at Fenway Park – a cornerstone of New England tradition that fans, families, and our communities can enjoy year-round,” said Fenway Sports Management President Mark Lev. “As part of this tradition, and in recognition of our region’s schools and institutions of higher education, we look forward to building on our efforts from the past year to support equitable and quality education across New England.”

Although the inaugural Fenway Bowl was postponed in 2020, FSM maintained the educational commitment that is integrated into each bowl game at Fenway Park. In 2020, the Fenway Bowl Honor Roll program thanked educators and institutions who went above and beyond to support their students and communities by highlighting the achievements of 30 teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators from across New England. The 2021 Fenway Bowl will include a similar charitable component that will be announced at a later date. Further details on the Fenway Bowl, the Honor Roll and the bowl’s mission can be found at the game’s website: www.fenwaybowl.com, on Facebook or on Twitter and Instagram @FenwayBowl.
